Students from West Nottingham visit with Delegate Rudolph in Annapolis
Students from West Nottingham visit with Delegate Rudolph in Annapolis.

The Internet is a wonderful and powerful tool that, with just a few clicks on the keyboard, can literally bring the world into our homes. Most of it is good - but some of it is not. It has been estimated that in 1998 17 million kids ages 2 to 18 were online. That number is expected to reach more than 42 million in five years. Several Internet sites have been developed that offer tips and guidelines for parents to help ensure that their children navigate the Internet in a safe and responsible manner. Some of these sites are listed below.
  • SafeKids.Com - offers tips for parents to minimize any potential risks of being online. It includes family rules such as never giving out any personal identifying information and making computer use a family activity.

  • Safe Surfin'- Sponsored by AOL, this site offers information for kids, teens and parents on how to safely surf the Web so that using the Internet and being online is a safe and fun experience.

  • Family Friendly Sites - offers an extensive sampling of Internet sites for children and parents.

  • Parent's Guide to Internet Safety - Produced by the FBI this site provides information on protecting children on-line.

To produce a listing of the sites recently accessed by your home computer simply click on the "history" button of the browser tool bar The best tip for safe surfing - parental involvement. Talk with your kids. Know who their "online" friends are and what sites and chat rooms they like to visit. And - don't be afraid to surf with your kids.
